Horror Monsters

I explored the Mummy as a horror monster. Monsters in horror films reflect common everyday fears, like vanity, death, possession, AI, the unknown, infection etc. A monster is often the central piece of a horror film, the thing that the main characters must defeat to continue to live. In films like Nosferatu, fantastical monsters with terrifying appearances are based on folklore or fairy-tales, whilst some films such as Scream build on a real-life villain; murderers/serial killers.

Nosferatu Narrative

Below is my table on the Nosferatu Narrative. Nosferatu follows the typical 3-act-structure of a film, with a set-up – Hutter making the journey to Transylvania and learning about Orlok’s creepy nature – a confrontation – Hutter feeling threatened by Orlok and Orlok going to Germany and killing many people – and a resolution – Orlok being defeated by Ellen hutter. Another common structure for a film is a five act structure, split into exposition, complications, cilamx, falling action, and catastrophe before resolution. The characters have either a physical or emotional journey between the beginning and end of the film and the narrative helps to structure this.
